Our 46th meeting was conducted on Tuesday, April 20, 2021, and began at 7pm. Picture

Notes from this meeting:

Everyone seemed to be in a joyful mood for this meeting, a condition that can only be attributed to being back in person at Beach PC's computer repair shop.
After some small talk, Pat started the meeting by bring several fun facts about Sherlock Holmes and ACD.
Following Pat, Tom introduced Show and Tell by displaying his new sweatshirt.  Tom then showed a clip from Granada TV's production of SCANDAL IN BOHEMIA, and proposed that we incorporate a short clip at each meeting in the future.
Next on our agenda was attempting to solve the mystery entitled HOT CASH.  Everyone participated, but kudos go to Michele and Beth for uncovering the main points of the mystery.
Our meeting ended with a fantastic presentation of ADVENTURE OF THE CARDBOARD BOX, by Michele. She even brought a cardboard box containing two ears packed in rock salt.  Well done, Michele!

Linda, who regularly attends the meetings, could not make it this evening.  We missed you, Linda!  We also missed Ed, who has decided to take a break from the meetings until we resume meeting in person.
Picture

Notes from this meeting:

While waiting for all meeting attendees to arrive, Tom talked about the "Gardner Heist",  the true story of The True Story of the World's Largest Unsolved Art Theft.  Although this topic created a lot of discussion, unfortunately, the mystery remains UNSOLVED!
Special mention goes to Candace, for an outstanding job at presenting THE ABBY GRANGE!  Well done!  You may recall that when she presented THE SPECKLED BAND, she created a diorama of the rooms talked about in the story.  Another member who deserves special recognition is Bill, for bring a poster and miniature ship to help illustrate his assigned stories.
During the fun fact, Rick did a great job at breaking down the elements of a traditional mystery story, as ACD did many times during his stories.  Kudos to Rick for recognizing ACD's use of the mystery story formula.

Picture

Notes from this meeting:

Tom brought us a quote this evening from The Solitary Cyclist, which was identified by Candace very quickly.  Both Pat and Barry brought fun facts about Arthur Conan Doyle, which were very interesting indeed.  Tom's show and tell was his English coin commemorating Sherlock Holmes, and Barb's show and tell were her grand kids, both of which were very well received. And after Tom moderated the discussion about the assigned mystery, Michelle brought us a review of tonight's story, which was The Missing Three-Quarter. Speaking for myself, I thought the meeting was in keeping with the highest traditions of a Sherlock Holmes scion.

Notes from this meeting:

This was a very enjoyable meeting indeed! Everyone seem to be in very good spirits, and we had the pleasure of welcoming our newest member, Marv.
The level of participation at tonight's meeting was high.  Pretty much everyone guessed "Irene Adler" from Michelle's quote, and almost everyone recognized Barry's character description was from the Adventure of the Crooked Man.  Linda's fun facts were very interesting and evoked much discussion. Ed correctly guessed the mystery, which revealed that the man killed his wife because he found out she was actually a transsexual, who was originally born a man.
Well done, everyone!

Picture

Notes from this meeting:

I feel like we are all getting used to using ZOOM to conduct our meetings.  While they were a little "choppy" at first, everyone seems to have settled in and are enjoying them as much as meeting in person.  Who knows... we may never go back to "Live"!
Everyone seemed very delighted that Carol joined us this evening.  She is a friend of Linda's, and seemed to enjoy our little group. I hope she joins us again!
Before beginning the meeting, we sang happy birthday to Michelle! She and Pat were over celebrating with Rick and Barb, and they joined the meeting as a group of four.

Notes from this meeting:

First of all, let me say that I reviewed the video recording of the meeting, and without a doubt, Linda had the most fun. I am not suggesting that we create a special award for the person who has the most fun, but if we had one, then she would definitely receive it!
NOTE: In past meeting notes I have always taken the time to review in detail what occurred during the meeting.  After giving it some thought, I am discontinuing this practice, except when something really unique occurs.

Our 35th meeting was conducted on Tuesday, May 19, 2020, and began at 7pm. Because of the Coronavirus Pandemic, this meeting was ONLINE, using the ZOOM Videoconferencing Service. Attending was Barry, Tom, Bill, Beth, Candace, Michelle, Pat, Barb, Rick, Ed, and Henry (not pictured).
Picture

Notes from this meeting:

Since this was our second ZOOM meeting, the proceedings were much smoother than last month.  Henry joined us, but could not be pictured because his computer did not have a camera or microphone.  Still, it was nice having Henry join us!
  • Ed read a quote from the story entitled "Mystery at Thorr Bridge", which no one was able to guess.  Oh, well, there's always next month!
  • Barb brought us a couple of fun facts about Sherlock Holmes
  • Instead of Show and Tell, Tom discussed the story lists he had received from just about all active members.  It was mildly entertaining to reveal everyone's five best stories list, and to see which ones were common to all lists.
  • The mystery to solve this month was "Chain Reaction", and was considered by all to be difficult. After many questions, it was Candace who deserves credit for solving the mystery.  Congratulations Candace!
  • Beth did a great job at leading the discussion of the story "The Solitary Cyclist". Rather than summarize the story, she decided to present a comparison of the ACD story with the adaptation created by Granada Television starring Jeremy Brett.  Well done, Beth!

Plans for the June meeting:

The June meeting will take place on June 16th at 7 pm.  At the present time, we plan for the meeting to be held in person at Beach PC, 5905 Carolina Beach Road, Unit 7, Wilmington, NC   28412 (just south of Monkey Junction).  If it looks like we will still be restricted by Covid-19, then the meeting will be handled using ZOOM.  Tom will let you know by email as we get closer to the date.
  • Michelle has volunteered to bring a quote.

  • Barry will bring a fun fact
  • Ed will bring a show and tell item

Our 34th meeting was conducted on Tuesday, April 21, 2020, and began at 7pm. Because of the Coronavirus Pandemic, this meeting was ONLINE, using the ZOOM Videoconferencing Service. Attending was Barb, Rick, Tom (and occasionally Tom's grandson Ezra), Ed, Linda (and her dog), Barry, Bill, Beth, Pat, and Michelle.
Picture

Notes from this meeting:

The meeting had it's challenges!  We were all treated by visions of pet dogs, not to mention the appearance of Tom's grandson, Ezra. Tom's shirt color changed, and his camera (or Internet connection) caused his picture to freeze from time to time.  Barry had similar problems, but managed to hang in for the entire meeting.  All in all, it was a good meeting, primarily because we were all "together" again.
  • Barry brought us a quote from Scandal in Bohemia, which several of us were successful at guessing.
  • Michelle read a character description of Violet Hunter from Copper Beeches, which was guessed by Ed.
  • Ed brought several fun facts for everyone's amusement and enjoyment.
  • Linda brought us one of her pets dressed as Sherlock Holmes, which served as our show and tell.  Thank you Linda!
  • The mystery for tonight's meeting was "The Root of all Evil", and credit for its solution goes to Rick, Linda, and Beth. Well done!
  • Barb did a  masterful job at presenting the story for the evening, The Norwood Builder.  Good discussion followed, including remarks about Granada Television's production of this story.

Plans for May's meeting:

The next meeting will be held on May 19th, and will probably be conducted using ZOOM again.  It that changes, Tom will let everyone know.  Here are the assignments for the May meeting:
  • Ed has volunteered to bring a quote.
  • Linda will bring a character description
  • Barb will bring a fun fact
  • Tom will bring a show and tell item
  • Beth will lead the discussion of the story "The Solitary Cyclist".

Our 33rd meeting was conducted on Wednesday, February 26, 2020, and began at 7pm at 5905 Carolina Beach Road, Unit 7, in Monkey Junction. Attending was (from left to right) Tom, Barb, Rick, Michelle, Pat, Ed, Lance (our newest member), Barry, and Candace (taking the picture).
Picture

Notes from this meeting:

  • The meeting was delayed slightly because we all wanted to wait for Ed's arrival.  While we waited, we got more acquainted with Lance, our newest member.
  • Barry read a quote for us to guess. The quote was from Scotland Yard detective Lestrade, and it came from the story "Boscombe Valley Mystery". Pretty much everyone guessed Lestrade, but no one came up with the story title.
  • Barb did a masterful job at describing Mary Morstan, which was guessed by Barry and Candace.  As Barb pointed out, she was Watson's first wife!
  • Pat entertained the group with several fun facts about Sherlock Holmes and ACD stories.
  • The mystery to solve was entitled "Keep Smiling".  This mystery seemed difficult at first... at least until Pat was able to explain what really happened.  He deserves most of the credit, but Candace uncovered several facts, and deserves honorable mention.
  • Ed did double duty tonight by bringing us several interesting collectibles, and then leading us in the discussion of The Naval Treaty.  Very detailed and well presented - well done, Ed.

Plans for our March meeting:

  • Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 17, 2020, and be held at the usual place (Tom's Computer Repair Shop - Beach PC).  All who have expressed an interest in the great detective, Sherlock Holmes, are invited to attend!
  • Barry has volunteered to bring us a quote from one of the stories we have already discussed.
  • Michelle said she would bring a character description for us all to guess.
  • Ed plans to introduce one or more fun facts about Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle.
  • Candace volunteered to bring an interesting collectible for show and tell.
  • The assigned story is The Norwood Builder, and Barb has volunteered to lead the discussion. Here is the link to the Granada Television series: https://archive.org/details/SherlockHolmesGranada/1985-09-08+-+Sherlock+Holmes+-+The+Norwood+Builder.avi

Our 32nd meeting was conducted on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, and began at 7pm at 5905 Carolina Beach Road, Unit 7, in Monkey Junction. Attending was (from left to right) Barb, Beth, Michelle, Candace, Pat, Tom, Rick, Bill, Barry, and Ed (out front taking the picture, and our newest member).
Picture

Notes from this meeting:

After welcoming Ed, our newest member, we went around the room and introduced ourselves, stating our name and occupation. Then, we got down to business...
  • Rick read a quote for us to guess... The quote was from A Study in Scarlett, and the speaker was none other than Watson. While some of us guessed the story correctly, no one gets credit for guessing the speaker!
  • Bill presented us with a character description who turned out to be Hudson, from the story Gloria Scott.  Candace gets credit for guessing the story, but again, no one guessed the character's name.
  • Michelle brought us a couple of fun facts, including naming the stories that mentioned Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock's older brother.
  • Candace brought us a wonderful book for show and tell.  It was a colorful "casebook" with authentic features, straight out of Victorian London.
  • The puzzle entitled "The end of DeRode" was a toughy, but Bill, Rick, and Candace was able to reveal most of the clues that led to the solution.
  • Barry did a great job presenting the story "The Greek Interpreter".  His summary and analysis was very professional and interesting.

Plans for February meeting:

  • Our next meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 26, 2020, and be held at the usual place (Tom's Computer Repair Shop - Beach PC). Note:  This is a departure from our regular meeting time, which has always been on the third Tuesday of each month.  We will try to get back on that schedule in March.

  • Barb brought us a fun fact about the use of "Elementary, My Dear Watson"...
  • Solving the mystery was a group effort, so everyone gets credit for identifying the third body in the grave, and the circumstances surrounding the case.
  • Tom led a discussion of The Blue Carbuncle.

Plans for the next meeting:

  • Our next meeting will take place on January 21, 2019, and be held at the usual place (Tom's Computer Repair Shop - Beach PC).

Picture

Notes from this meeting:

  • Pat read a character description for Mary Morstan, who was introduced to Watson in SIGN OF FOUR, and later became his wife.  Credit for guessing her identity goes to Michelle and Candace.
  • Michelle brought a fun fact for the group to enjoy.
  • The mystery to solve was entitled "Brother, can you share a crime?", and was quite a puzzler for everyone... except Rick! It seemed like Rick asked all the right questions to lead to the solution of this crime, and he definitely gets credit! Here is the solution:  "When Astorbilt refused to lend his private secretary money for her brother, she killed him. As he finished signing a check, she stabbed him in the neck with a pen, then changed the amount on the check. She was caught when the bank noticed the star was missing from his signature."
  • Linda did a masterful job at presenting the story entitled "The Resident Patient", and then led the discussion.

Notes for the next meeeting:

  • December's meeting will take place on Tuesday, December 17th, at 7 pm.  Of course, the place will be Tom's computer repair shop, Beach PC.
  • Candace volunteered to bring a character description.

Picture

Notes from this meeting:

  • Tom read a quote from "A Study in Scarlet", and it was successfully guessed by Barb, Linda, and someone else who forgot to put their name on their slip of paper.
  • Michelle did a wonderful job at presenting a character description which nobody could guess (Tom did guess the story).  The character was Tonga from the story "Sign of the Four".
  • Michelle also presented a fun fact - Although they go armed with a gun in several stories, Sherlock and Watson shoot at someone only once in all of the stories Arthur Canon Doyle wrote. That story is  "Sign of the Four", and they are shooting at Tonga!
  • The mystery to solve tonight was "The Masked Murder", and joint credit goes to Rick and Linda for the solution.  Rick guessed that Victor was not human, and LInda guessed that Victor was a dog, and that he buried the gun!  Well done, Rick and Linda!
  • Tom did a fair job at presenting tonight's story entitled "The Crooked Man".  It was barely good enough to solicit discussion from the group.

Plans for the November meeting:

  • November's meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 19th, at 7 pm.  Of course, the place will be Tom's computer repair shop, Beach PC.

Notes from this Meeting:

The meeting started on time, with discussions about what everyone has been doing over the summer. We mentioned several members who couldn't make tonight's meeting, including Barb (she was kind enough to allow Rick to attend).
Mystery Quote:  Since Tom forgot to post a mystery quote in the notes from the last meeting, he provided one "on the fly".  The quote was from "Scandal in Bohemia", and it was guessed correctly by  Candace, Barry, Michelle, and Rick.
Mystery to Solve:  The mystery this month was entitled D.O.A.  After much discussion, Beth and Candace shared credit for uncovering the key parts to this mystery.
Story to Discuss:  Bill did a masterful job at presenting "The Gloria Scott", and even brought a model sailing ship to liven up the discussion.

Our 26th meeting was conducted on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, and began at 7pm at 5905 Carolina Beach Road, Unit 7, in Monkey Junction. Attending was (from left to right) Candace, Michelle, Pat, Rick, Tom, Barb, Beth, Henry, and Bill (taking the picture).
Picture

Notes from this meeting:

Although it was not yet time to discuss the story for tonight's meeting (which was "A Study in Scarlett"), several members could not wait to comment on the Mormons and the part they planed in the story. Just after 7pm, I started the meeting and told everyone that we would have to postpone that discussion until it was time! Also, we were all saddened to hear that this will be Henry's last meeting with us. Henry is moving to Chapel Hill, and we wish him all the best!  He will be GREATLY missed!
Mystery Quote:  The Mystery quote was from the "Adventure of the Priory School".  By the way, Tom chose this particular quote because of ACD's colorful language ("We stared in silent amazement at this ponderous piece of wreckage..."). Bill, Rick, Barb, and Candace get credit for correctly naming this story.
Mystery Character Description:  Candace brought us the mystery character, which turned out to be Mary Morston from the story "The Sign of Four".  Bill and Candace get credit for guessing the story!
Mystery to Solve: The mystery was entitled "An evening with Pat and Mike". This story was difficult, and yielded much discussion and many questions concerning the solution. Credit for helping solve this mystery was Michelle, who correctly identified the piece of paper to be a suicide note, and Beth, who correctly that the cause of death was poison.  Candace receives honorable mention for asking questions which led to the discovery that Pat was blind.
Show and Tell:  Tom passed around a "case file" for "A Study in Scarlett" for everyone to see. Also, at the end of the meeting, Tom mentioned he had recently created a new SH game called 98Clues.com, and invited everyone to visit that site and participate by completing the Questionnaire.  All participants will be able to play the game 98Clues.com during the August meeting, so don't be left out!
Picture
Story to Discuss:  Henry did a great job at presenting the story "A Study in Scarlett".  Everyone participated in a lively discussion of this story, which made for an interesting evening.

Plans for the August Meeting:

Since so many of our members are travelling during the month of July, we have decided to skip that month.  The next meeting will be Tuesday, August 20, 2019, at 7pm.  Bill volunteered to lead a discussion on "The Gloria Scott", and Beth agreed to bring mystery Character. The Mystery to solve is shown below:

Our 25th meeting was conducted on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, and began at 7pm at 5905 Carolina Beach Road, Unit 7, in Monkey Junction. Attending was (from left to right) Candace, Barb, Pat, Michelle, Tom, Rick, Bill, Beth, Henry, and Barry (sorry you got "cut in half", Candace). Just an observation, but why is Tom and Rick leaning to their left?
Picture

Notes from the May Meeting:

Our 25th meeting began at around 7pm as usual, with small talk about what's new with members present.  Tom reported on the brief interaction with the SH club in Mt. Olive, which really never got off the ground.
Mystery Quote:  The Mystery quote was from the "Adventure of the Dancing Men" - Barry, Rick, Barb, and Candace get credit for correctly naming this story.
Mystery Character Description:  Pat brought us the mystery character, which turned out to be Grimsby Roylett from the story "The Speckled Band".  Noone gets credit for this one!
Mystery to Solve: The mystery was entitled "A fatal attack of gas", which was difficult, but not unsolvable.  Barry guessed correctly that the oxygen container that was supposed to keep the millionaire safe was actually the murder weapon. Candace guess that the glass enclosure was actually the revolving door in the man's building.
Story to Discuss:  Michelle did a great job at presenting the story "The Stockbroker's Clerk".
Show and Tell:
Picture
Tom brought a special SH coffee mug, a SH yellow duckie, and a replica of the SH Bar in London. Rick wore his SH socks, as shown in the picture.

At the end of the meeting, Tom mentioned he had recently created a new SH game called 98Clues.com.  He also announced that he created a Senior Adult relationship building tool called SeniorInterview.com.  To visit each of these two new sites, click on their logo.

Plans for the June Meeting:

The June meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, at 7pm. The place will be Beach PC, 5905 Carolina Beach Road, #7 in Monkey Junction.  The mystery quote to identify is as follows:
"We have had some dramatic entrances and exits upon our small stage at Baker Street, but I cannot recollect anything more sudden and startling than the first appearance of Thorneycroft Huxtable, M.A., Ph.D., etc. His card, which seemed too small to carry the weight of his academic distinctions, preceded him by a few seconds, and then he entered himself -- so large, so pompous, and so dignified that he was the very embodiment of self-possession and solidity. And yet his first action, when the door had closed behind him, was to stagger against the table, whence he slipped down upon the floor, and there was that majestic figure prostrate and insensible upon our bearskin hearth-rug.  We had sprung to our feet, and for a few moments we stared in silent amazement at this ponderous piece of wreckage, which told of some sudden and fatal storm far out on the ocean of life."
The Mystery character description will be brought by Candace, and the story to discuss will be "A Study in Scarlett", led by Henry.  The mystery to solve will be as follows:
